HDD detected in device manager but not in my computer?

I recently bought a new Seagate Barracuda 500GB ST500DM002 as a backup drive for my PC. When I connected it using a SATAIII cable it did not show up in my computer. Further investigation revealed that it was detectable in device manager but i could not access it. Is there any way to activate or initialize it? or is it just faulty?

Important Specs (I think?):
i5 2500K CPU
Asrock extreme3 gen3 Motherboard
Windows 7 Home Premium
HD 6950 Graphics Card​

Do you have the most recent SATA drivers for your motherboard?

Open the start menu. Right click on Computer. Choose Manage. Go down on the left pane to Disk management. In the bottom right pane, you should see your drive. Right click on the new drive medium, choose initialize.
