It says it has a maximum capacity of 8GB (2x4GB). There are only two slots which hold 4GB max each.

And DIMM is for desktops, SO-DIMM is for laptops. So you would need to look for a DDR3 4GB SO-DIMM 204-pin.

I think it would be better if he gets just one more 4GB stick. So they can dual channel. With one 8GB stick he won't be able to use the other slot or the 4GB stick that came with the laptop.

Thanks to both of you for the help!

where did you find the info on the pins? article I read mentioned 204 or 240

DIMM I was not sure if it was one or two channels and I did read the bit about SO being for smaller machines/notebooks.. but wasnt sure!

what is the difference between one stick and two sticks? wouldn't one full stick be better?

Your laptop takes only DDR3 SO-DIMM which is 204-pins. 240-pin memory is the desktop version, and only for desktops.

DIMM again is only for desktops.

Having two sticks of the same or similar memory will take advantage of having them run in dual channel mode which will increase the memory bandwidth and performance. Running one single stick will run in single channel.
