How would you upgrade this laptop for under 1400?

The cost of the laptop is too high for what you can already get. That setup is missing a lot... I just purchased my laptop a few days ago. Here's the two I was stuck between. The cost for the ASUS is $1200 and the MSI is $1250 after rebate. If you're willing to spend $150, I recommend you do what I did. I bought the MSI and a 120GB SSD to go with. The last link is the SSD I bought. ($150 after rebate)

Newegg.com - MSI GT683R-242US Notebook Intel Core i7 2630QM(2.00GHz) 15.6" 12GB Memory 1TB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M
Newegg.com - ASUS G53SX-NH71 Notebook Intel Core i7 2670QM(2.20GHz) 15.6" 8GB Memory DDR3 1333 500GB HDD 7200rpm DL DVD±RW/CD-RW NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560M

If you have a Dell account, you can always look into the Dell outlet (refurbished) machines... "Usually" they are much cheaper. I picked up the M17X R2, 2010 model for little over a grand off the original price.
