What a bad day! I have a brand new Maxtor 80GB HD (purchased 2 weeks ago) and today I get a blue screen message from Windows XP during boot up that there is something wrong with F: drive and it is going to verify. Comes back with a message saying..... 2, 3, 5, 7, 8 & 24 cannot be read (cant remember whether it referred to sectors...dont know the exact terminology) and then proceeds with start-up.

When I go to my computer and select F: drive it hesitates and then states the 'drive in F: is not formated, Do I want to format now? Of course I say no.

Is there anything I can do? There is some really important information in that drive.

Thanks for any assistance.

scan disk maybe it can allocate the bad sectors so its still useable so you can get your data off then get it warrantied. Also MaxBlast3 may help determine the problem.

Thanks Cappy, but it does not even recognize the disk anymore. Says that record segments 4,5,6,7,24,25,26,27 are all unreadable. Then says there is an unspecified error.

When I look at the drive under disk management, it says that the drive is empty and unformatted.

This is going to drive me insane....It is 10:45pm where I am and tomorrow is a holiday. I really need to sort this out.

Is there anything else you can think of that I might try? Appreciate any assistance you or anyone else can offer

Only Maxblast 3 create a bootable floppy to try and repair .Ive was able to repair 1 with it or move data to another drive .

"Criskie Poppin'..."

You were supposed to format that drive reguardless. (I got the same message when i got mine.) I think it's written on the manual that came with the box.

From what I read about maxblast3, it sounds like it will format my hard drive. Does it provide a prompt to allow for selection of what I need to do?

I have been trying a few recovery programs and they are not able to get the job done

Windows wont install unless the drive is formatted 1st. Maxblast3 will do the job also .You can do advanced setup up to slice(partion and setup) the drive as well .Very handy tool .Also was this your main boot drive? Or a storage drive? If its a storage drive or slave and your OS is on your primary drive you can format the drive from within windows.Right click on it and select Format.

F: drive has very important files on it....It has crashed and I need to recover. I cannot re-format now.

There are other tools you can try like Partion Magic/Norton Ghost etc... But nothing may work unfortionately. You may even try DOS.

if the data on the hard drive is really important, you can get the data recovered by specialists who put it in a lab, take out the disk platters and read all data on it, then give that data to you; although that is usually very expensive
just how important is the data?
