If you have the option to configure it, I'd recommend only going for the i5 but a 256GB SSD.

They do have that model, but I think the 128gb SSD should be enough for OS and programs, he has a 2tb USB 3.0 external that he keeps all his files and media on, so that's why I'm not concerned about dropping the processor for a little more storage. I figure I might as well just give him an i7 like his old man

Anyway yeah, if he's got an external then just the 128GB should be fine, particularly since it's USB3 (i.e. good for VMs).
