well I have this little problem where I cannot run chkdsk on my secondary hard drive. It all started when I was writing a file to the drive and my pc bosd. Then when I went to copy a file windows told me the drive was "dity" and to run check disk. so I went to run it, just to find it crashing instantly when ran, so I went to cmd. Then when I went to run chkdsk, I just get an error after it asks if I would like to force a dismount. "cannot lock the drive. The volume is still in use" but the funny part is that its just a storage drive, and nothing is running from it.

I have scoured the interwebs to find little on this subject with an exfat drive.

edit os is windows 7

any help would be much obliged

I'm not trying to repair windows through, just a drive with a tb of random backed up data

it has serveral repair options you should try. including starting cmd without the os

What are the system recovery options in Windows 7?

I can already do that with windows by hitting F8 before windows starts through. And got the same error in there as well

You can try this:
The Chkdsk.exe program does not start correctly on a Windows 7-based computer

Also, in an elevated command prompt (run as administrator), type in "chkdsk D:/r" (no quotes), and change D: to whatever your disk is named. If it says it is in use and asks if you want to run it on reboot, say yes and reboot. To force this make sure you have a file open on that drive.

It never asks if I want to run it at reboot, although I have tried forcing it too, it never starts, just boots in to windows

Have you tried running the diagnostic problem available from the drive manufacturer?
