Can't boot. Stuck on "a disk read error has occurred press ctrl+alt+del" . Dell inspiron 1000 laptop.

Well, does it have a boot loader on it? Is it the OS drive? This tells us very little.

If so, Windows is probably corrupted.

Not sure if it has boot loader. Ran diagnostic and came up with 4 disk errors. I've Googled codes but no luck. I'm going to try hdd utility cd next.

Hi Ravenousj,
I have gone thorough your problem and there seem to be several reasons for that.
-Your hard disk might be corrupted
-Your video card may not powerful enough to stream HD videos

From the reasons above, The VGA problem can be the main reason. If you are using a VGA card, you can try updating its driver. If it doesn't solve the problem, it has to be a problem with your hard disk or the system partition. Follow this link for a step by step guide on solving your problem.

VGA would not be a problem in this situation. He can't even get into windows.

Have you tried the Win 7 DVD to help fix it? restore, repair.

Tried installing 98, xp, xp pro and some Linux OS. Nothing worked. Linux only works Live CD. So it has to broke.
