I am looking at buying an i3 540 core to use on a new computer build, but my question is this, is it enough to do moderate gaming on? I know most games today would like you to use at least a 3.0 GHz, and this should just about cover that running at about 3.06. But in all actuallty, is it enough? Thanks in advance!

Yeah they are capable of modern gaming, though i'd still advise against it if you can get an i5 or i7, the i3s have been benchmarking junky for most of their lifetime.

The second gen chips were better but honestly, with better chips on the market now for a cheaper or same price i wouldnt get an i3.

yup sure you can play the games you want with this requirement for sure, but if you ask my personal opinion on i3 then i will suggest you to go for i5 or i7. Even i5 is well n good, that's my perssonal view.

What current gen i5 or i7 are you going to get for the same price as an i3?

I do agree somewhat though, 1156 socket is pretty much dead for new builds.
Either get an i3 2100 (1155 socket), which is still a good chip, so you can upgrade later.
Or, if you've got a tight budget, go for an AMD FX-4100 or Phenom II X4 CPU.
