trouble with new hard drive blank screen

I just got a new hard drive for my dell laptop, after my computer crashed last week.
I installed the new hard drive, but all i'm getting is a screen saying operating system not found.
nothing else.
I don't really know anything about computers, and could really use help!

Is your hard drive detected in the bios? To get into the bios you have to press like F2 or DEL to enter, not sure which one since different companies use different keys.
Did you install an operating system?

That's what I'm thinking. You can't just swap out your hard drives and expect it to work. The operating system is on your old drive.
