480 in SLI, worth-it upgrade?

I'm going to be getting an AMD 6870 in crossfire but I'm confused about the x16/x16 and x8/x8 slots. Does it make that big of a difference? Could someone recommend me a motherboard that has this?

And frankly, It fits my situation perfect as I'd have to bring my card down to the x8/x8 to get SLI working. I might look into it, but so far, the card is doing excellent!
