cpu upgrade problems

It's just the socket that got me. I don't really care what they said is compatible. It's just not possible.

i see - makes sense but i do think that mobo supports the other socket.

i think the CPU i got was bad and i'm returning it. i'm ordering a Phenom II 945 because as explained here (although a socket AM3) it does work with that mobo (verified on this thread and also in the reviews for this cpu at newegg.com). i'll post back if/when i get it running.

after some research on another bb i decided to buy this cpu:

AMD Phenom II X4 945 Deneb 3.0GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 6MB L3 Cache Socket AM3 95W Quad-Core Desktop Processor HDX945WFGMBOX

it's also a quad but i took a chance and it worked. running very nicely on my M2N-SLI. i'm not sure why the previous chip wasn't working because *it is* supported (i checked with ASUS, but i'm glad this one does work. i'm sending the old one back because as far as i can tell it is DOA.
