Hello and thank you,

My wife has an XP box with only a CD RW which is not able to see and install a large computer program that is on DVD. I am thinking about getting an external DVD drive for this. My question is...

Will Windows XP be able to install computer programs from an external DVD Drive?

I'm also playing with the idea of installing a DVD drive directly into the box but an external drive is faster, easier, and has more options for my situation.

Yes, you can install programs using an external DVD drive.

But external drives are signifigantly more expensive than internal ones and are much slower. Installing large programs could take a while.

XP isn't an issue in this case so yes you will be able to install large programs from an external DVD drive. The only possible issue I can think of would be installing an OS where you need to be able to boot from the external drive. Depending on how old the computer is, it may not have the option to boot from USB. It's probably not a factor unless the machine is fairly old.
