I have an old LGA775 motherboard, and the CPU is a pentium D @3ghz. Will upgrading to a core 2 quad of some sorts give me alot more performance you think or is it the motherboard itself that's bottle necking my system?

It depends on what you're using your system for. Going to a Core 2 Quad will give you much better performance over a Pentium D, but depending on what you're using it for you might want to save for an i3/i5 combo.

The Core 2 Quads are also very expensive nowadays. You could probably get an i5 and a motherboard for it for just a little more than the C2Q. RAM is also very cheap for the newer chipsets. (DDR3 vs DDR2 on most C2Q motherboards)
