The specs for the 6770 and the 5770 look the same but charts seem to say that the 5770 performs a little bit better.
And we can't really tell you how much better it will be, since it depends what you are playing.
In the charts I look at, for an average FPS rating of games played on maximum setting, your 9800 GT would get around 16 FPS.
The 6770 would get you around 49 FPS.
The 5770 can get you around 52 FPS.

i have a 430 watt power supply thermal take. would that be fine running a radeon 6870 with AMD athelon x4 II 3ghz i did the calculator test on the internet and it said i would atleast need 436 watt minium and 486 recommended. would my 430 watt power supply still be okay with this ? what is the worst thing that can happen if it isnt enough.

It can screw everything up and your computer won't run.
You would need a 500W PSU minimum.
If you do get another go with Antec or Corsair they are the best when it comes to PSUs
