My computer is home made, Windows 7 64 bit,
Mem 4gig DDR
CPU AMD Athlon 64x2 4400+
MB MCI MS-7125 socket 939
Graphics card, NVIDIA 7800GT Gforce 256mb
2 hard drives and an optical drive.
I don't have the money for a new build any time soon , but was a wondering if I could just get a newer graphics card to get a little more performance for some games I play .
I was looking at PCI express x16 cards, I guess my slot is 1.0. I don't see much improvements there unless I go to 2.0 which I know is backward compatible, but then I don't get the full benefit of 2.0 I know. So any suggestions???

2.0 doesn't really matter as current graphics cards do not use all of the available bandwidth.

Just about anything fairly current will be a step up for you. I used to have a s939 4200+ so I feel your current pain. I went from a 7800GTX to a X1950XT to a HD3850 to a GTX 260 Core 216 while on my 4200+.

I'm not sure of your budget, but the 5770 is a good mid-range card, but check out our http://www.techist.com/forums/f76/graphics-performance-list-212331/ and see where the cards all rank.

Thanks guys, I think I could scrap $50 -60 bucks with out hurting, scimming through New Egg I think I could get an upgrade for that price. I dont see any sense in spending much more anyway , given my cpu and ram. I am sort of partial to Nvidia GPUs as their drivers and support have been excellent for me.

Looking through NewEgg I found this, EVGA 01G-P3-1430-LR GeForce GT 430 (Fermi) 1GB 128-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready Video Card $59.99 free shipping. My old 7800 Gt is #78 dwon on the performance list, this would move me closer to # 20 wouldnt it? EVGA has been real good to me , they replaced a MB for me with a higher end board no problems. The XFX HD 5770 looks nice but $105 ( $74.99 after rebate) is a little high for me. What do you all think?
