Hi all. New here seeking info.
I have a Gateway PC that caught a surge and stopped displaying. It's just outside of the one year warranty (YAAAAYY!!), so I had a computer tech take a look at it for me. He tells me the MOBO is shot. I've always wanted to do a computer build, so I've decided to try and replace the motherboard on this one myself.
I've worked inside a PC case before, replacing/adding various video and sound cards, RAM, etc. So, I'm somewhat comfortable with it. I looked up some tutorials on doing it, and I think I can handle it.
The only thing that is giving me pause is picking out a motherboard. Should I just find out which one is in the PC and try to basically replace it exactly. Or can I try to upgrade slightly as far as the various ports, etc? What's the best way to pick out a motherboard to make sure it will work, and a good place to get them?
