Honestly that would be worth considering if your budget can handle it. What kind of a budget are you looking at? Depending on that we will know better what to recommend (AMD or Intel).
 
If you have $1200 to spend then your best option is to build a new pc. There is nothing you can buy for your old computer that will make it run as good (stability and performance wise) as what you would have with a brand new one.

I would avoid ebay like it had the plague. While there are many honest people on ebay, there are just as many, or possibly more thieves and pirates.

This. You can always keep your old computer as a backup or give it to a family member who doesn't have one.
