Building i7 Computer

Hi every one.

The PC i have right now has just gave up on me. Iv tried every thing to get it back up and running but i have had no luck. Iv been wanting to build my own pc since the beginning of last year but never had the funds to do so.

This is what iv came up with so far.

Processor:

A quick word of advice - it's better to buy everything from the same site if you can, that way you save on shipping and you can guarantee everything will arrive at the same time.

The difference between the two CPUs is the 'K' after the 2600.
2600K = Allows overclocking
2600 = No overclocking
It's better to go for the i5 2500K than the 2600.

So basically, if you're going to be overclocking, and have the money, go for the i7 2600k.

You will need to get RAM in multiples of two if you're going for a Sandy Bridge i7 CPU. So, 2x2GB, 2x4GB, 4x2GB and so on. Look for a decent pair of 2x4GB sticks (if this build is for gaming, you won't need more than 8GB) that run at 1600MHz or higher.

That motherboard is the wrong socket for the CPU you want to buy - that motherboard is 1336 socket, while the CPU is 1155 socket. So, you should look for a motherboard which has a 1155 socket. You'll need a P67 chipset motherboard if you want to overclock.

Oh, and you mentioned you were worried about the motherboard fitting? Motherboards use several size standards. ATX is the usual one; most motherboards are this, and pretty much all cases will fit ATX-size motherboards. There's also mATX, which is a smaller standard. As long as the case you're after supports the standard that the motherboard is, they will fit perfectly together.

Im gonna be using this for
Video editing (Adobe After Effects)
Photoshop
Gaming, one game that i play is Ram hungry - Its on 24/7 x 8 of the client (Its a mmo)
and normal use - I want to do this all at the same time.

So the higher the speed the better (for rendering) and higher the ram the better since i play a ram hungry game.

I wasnt worried about it fitting in the case but rather that the graphics card will have enough space to fit on it.

Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

- Do you need a monitor?

I might stick with the one i have now or buy a 27inch 2560x1440

- Why did you not include a hard drive?

I already have a few spare hard drives, though if you recommend i should buy a new one i will =)

Alright, so i have been looking at motherboards and noticed that 1155 socket = dual channel and 1366 socket = triple channel
Is there much difference between the new i7 CPU and the old ones? except for the processing speed?

They're different series of CPUs - the clock speed (the GHz) can only compare to other CPUs in that respective series. Basically, two CPUs from two different series, running at the same clock speed, aren't going to be equal in overall performance, because they will have different architectures and coding and so on - even if they're similar like the two series you're quoting.

Sandy Bridge is the newer series of the i3/i5/i7 CPUs, and it's definitely worth getting one over one of the older ones.

I poked around for some Sandy Bridge motherboards with more than 4 slots, but couldn't find any. I don't really see why you'd need them? Since most of the mid- and high-end mobos can take up to 32GB. Since you're only after at least 12GB of RAM, get a 2x4GB set of RAM, and then the same RAM but in a 2x2GB set. That'll get you your 12GB. And if you ever want to go up from that, you can replace the 2x2GB with a 2x4GB set and you'll have 16GB.

Hard drives - depending on old they are, you'll probably want to replace them. And besides, with your budget you should definitely get a solid state drive - nothing will improve the performance of your computer more than the addition of an SSD. Get one with at least 60GB, and just have your OS and programs on it, and then use something like a 1TB HDD for all your storage.

And with the HAF932, as far as I know all current GPUs will fit in it - a GTX580 definitely will.

That's only true if you don't take deals into account. Sites like scan.co.uk have daily 'Today Only' deals that are sometimes okay, and sometimes brilliant. And if you save the link from a Today Only, you can still use that deal for a week.

I just checked the shopping basket and for some reason it shows the price as:
Net Total: £1,167.48
Carriage: £13.98
VAT: £236.32
Total: £1,417.78

Did i do something wrong or is that just the price without the deal? If so how can i get the deal to have effect on the total price?
