What is the difference between common hard drives (scsi i beleive) and SATA? what exactly is SATA and do I need to look for anything special when getting a new motherboard if I decide to get a SATA drive.

The three most common types are E(IDE), SATA and SCSI

Forget about SCSI, they are DAMN expensive.

IDE was used until a few years ago, then EIDE came...the one u are probably using in your computer. EIDE is enhanced IDE, so basically an improved technology.

SATA is the newest technology.

All motherboards support (E)IDE and most newer motherboards support SATA (wich is faster than (E)IDE)

Make sure ur motherbpard supports SATA before buying a SATA drive

SATA stands for serial ATA, it means that rather than the paralell data transfer with IDE, it transfers data serially, which is faster, and the cables are smaller which is 2 pluses.

actually, in theory serial in slower than parralell, but SATA uses some kind of trick to be able to run faster than IDE (i have to look into this)

yes....there is IDE, (E)IDE, ATA, PATA and SATA

ATA and PATA are the same. Pata=Parralell and Sata=Serial like mentioned before.

But ATA is something different than IDE. ATA is the transfer type. All ATA (=PATA) are using the IDE interface
