Could be, Only thing is I don't have another PSU that will fit at the moment.

So after more trial and error, I somehow managed to get the motherboard fired up with the PSU, hooked up everything exactly as it was in the case on a chair seat. (Had tried this previously) And finally got the motherboard to stay powered up - set it back in the case and voila it works now. I've never had such a problem putting together a computer before minus bad parts that were obviously RMA material.
