I work for an online computer sales store similar to newegg. I was recently writing an ad for some DDR2 memory and, while checking the supplier for specs, I noticed that they (our supplier) actually sold the same memory with four different chip makers: hynix, micron, samsung, and value.

My question is this: What is the importance of these different chip makers?

I assume it has to do with compatibility but, as i'm not an actual tech, I don't really understand memory compatibility as I should. If it is a compatibility issue, how does one determine which chip type they need to purchase?

Thanks for any and all responses!

There in no real difference besides the name of the brand. Actually 2 of those brands (Samsung and Value) are made using identical chips.

Now within each brand and within their DDR2 lineup they have chipsets with different timings and speeds. For example they have some sets that are rated at DDRII800 5-5-5-15 and some at DDRII667 3-5-5-20 and so on.
