Bad HD?

When booting up getting an error that reads:

"1720- S.M.A.R.T. Hard drive detects imminent failure, please back up the contents of the hard drive and run HDD self test in F10 Setup."

Does this always mean the HD is shot? if so, what is the easiest way to backup the HD?

It is about to fail. There are many ways to backup your HDD. Move all your personal files to another hard drive is simplest.
