Upgrading my Mobo, CPU, Ram, GPU and Monitor (>24", >=1200 vert pixels). Budget is ~$800
Already have a big psu

This is a mod to my existing gaming rig (s939 AMD build) and playing directx 10/11 games is my goal (i'm still stuck in Dx9)

The monitor will also be used as a home station for my wife's school laptop (HP dv6t, i7/8gb/HD 5650)

I hope to achieve a rig that will be upgradeable to a faster processor (i.e. X4 to X6) and SLI or Xfire when needed.

I have no aligencies to Intel/AMD/nVidia/ATI so whatever

this is what I have so far

Thanks for the responses.

Pretty sure both of those cards are slower than the GTX 470, at least according the the list over on the overclock.com forum

In the 250$ CPU/MoBo combo range, wouldnt it be smarter to get a s1156 mobo and an i3 chip so I can upgrade to an i7 in a year for cheap? Preeety sure the graphics card is going to be doing most of the heavy lifting :)
i.e.

Well with an i3 you would be heavily crippled graphic wise by your CPU. That graphics card (470) needs a power house processor to support all of it's glory, so I suggest you either go with what we have suggest or you spend most of it on a processor go with something cheaper for graphics until you can afford the 470.

To put it bluntly you would be going *** backward if you bought a mediocre CPU and a 470.

So I gotta have at least a i5 chip if i go intel and have a beast of a gpu?

It didnt used to be like that when i built my last rig, time's are a changin!

I'd switch up the monitor to this Newegg.com - ASUS VW266H Black 25.5" 2ms(GTG) HDMI Widescreen LCD Monitor 300 cd/m2 1000:1 (ASCR 20000:1) Built in Speakers w/ component connector. It's $290 ($260 after a rebate) and a better screen while only sacrificing 2.5 inches which in my opinion is better because the ASUS will give a more crisp and more accurate picture. Also it allows you to put a smidge more into the rest of your build.

and at the end of the day today's games are much more GPU dependent than CPU dependent and the CPU capabilities far outpace what games can take advantage of, so spend more on the GPU but don't discount the CPU.

possible problem!

psu isnt as beefy as i remember, 12V rails are looking like this:
COOLMAX 550W
12V1 = 18A
12V2 = 18A
12V3 = 15A
450W on 12V total
558W all voltages combine

is that enough to power the 5870?
