keeping hard drive in freezing temp

Why would you keep it frozen? The freezer trick is only useful for a short time, not prolonged time. Just put it in an antistatic bag, and but it on your bookshelf.
 
Yeah... I would not recommend doing this.
Especially without a Ziploc bag (not that a Ziploc would help other then if you are putting it in the freezer).
Freezing the drive can cause microscopic size changes of the heads and platters alignment.
Once they are off track, you could loose data or even destroy the drive.
Heating the HDD in the stove wouldn't be a good idea either.
 
Most standard hard drives, use a SMALL amount of lube for the spindle, if it gets cold enough on the spindle, it's very possible it will literally freeze up.

Operating temps are usualy 40F or higher, much lower, and things don't work properly.

You could POSSIBLY use an SSD, with some insulation around it that way it can retain some of the heat it generates while working.
