My Win7 computer powers down shortly after start up. the first try when cold, it'll make it until the swirling window is formed. Each try after that it shuts down sooner. When warm, it won't even make it past the BIOS screen.

That leads me to believe it's not a software problem, but what hardware do I start looking at first?

Thanks

Some questions for you:

Is this a self built computer or bought from the factory?
Has the computer worked in the past?
If so, was there a certain time when the computer stopped booting all together?

Self built - Running great for 5 years.
New power supply 2 years ago - quieter for the wife. ;-)

OK a week ago - after a week vacation, no boot.

MoBo: P5ND2-SLI Deluxe
Power: Zalman ZM750-HP 750 watt
CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz
Mem: 4 GB
Graphics: NVidia GeForce 7800 GT 256MB
HD: 300GB
OpSys: Win7 64 bit

OK, first I would look at your RAM. Get Memtest86+ and do a few passes on that, to make sure there is nothing wrong there.

Next, get diagnostic software from your HDD's manufacturer. See if anything is messed up.

Go into BIOS, and see how your CPU temps are. Possibly reset your BIOS. Is there any new firmware version?

If any of that goes awry, that is most likely your problem.

OK, here's the deal. I can't "run" anything! It shuts off even before I can get to the BIOS. It does show the BIOS splash sceen, but that's it.

Clean the dust out, make sure all the fans are working. It sounds like the cpu or the power supply is getting hot.
