I know if i do want a chip in the future it would be a 939, but i was wundering, if there was any difference in performance between the socket 939 and the 754?

Thanks

I don't think there's a difference in the actual socket speed, but even if there isn't I would get 939. That's what AMD's going to be using in the future. If you get a 754 now, you'll only have to change your processor AND motherboard later, rather than maybe just your processor.

I am pretty sure 939 is faster from all the reviews at anandtech and yea like you said it is future proof.

Am I correct in assuming that Socket 754 is going to be like AMD's SLOT A?
Soon to be obsolete.

Therefore people should just hold back until the Socket 939 CPUs come down in price?

the 939 are same price as 754 now... amd has 939 in 3200, 3500, and 3000. No point into getting 754 now.. amd is gona continu with the socket 939, as the 754 doesnt support dual channel, and the 939 does.

Well the problem down here is that I don't seem to be able to get in the any Socket 939 that are lower that 3400.

It really depends. The 939 chips like the 3500+ and 3800+ have about 512kb of cache compared to the 754 chips like the 3200+, 3400+ and 3700+ which all have 1mb of cache. The extra cache can make a huge difference in future games that requires alot of power.

For games right now, the performance of a 3400/3700+ can be compared to the 3500/3800+, however. The 754 chips are half the cost of the 939 chips.

The advantage of the 754 chips are it's extra cache (which can make a noticeable gaming difference in power-hungry games like Doom 3) and it is also 50% cheaper while the 939 chips are more future proof (since there are boards built for them that also have PCI-E).

The Socket 939 4000+ just came out. It is similar to the FX-53, with 1mb of cache, but it's really expensive and you must be rich and/or spoiled to obtain such a beast.

Edit: Did i also mention the 939 chips are capable of running dual channel mainly because of the extra pins.

I'm 99.9% sure that the 4000+ is the EXACT same as the fx-53, which is why they cost the same right now, and why amd is phasing out the "fx-53"...they're just naming it different.
