Need a new high performance computer.... need advice, please!

I haven't built a computer in a couple years and I have no idea what is good anymore... need a little help to get back in the business. I need to build a computer that will beat my current setup, but I need to keep it under $800. My current PC specs:

Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66Ghz
2GB DDR2 800 RAM
Gigabyte P35-DS3R Motherboard
500GB 7200RPM Hardrive
ATI X1950XT Video card
550W Xclio Greatpower
DVD Burner

I know, my PC is OLD. I have a feeling you guys will have a fairly easy time making a computer better than this one for less than $800... please list brand/spec. Thank you!!!!!!!

Thanks guys, but I never really looked into an AMD... I would prefer a Core i5 or something. Not really sure how the two compare, but I'm sure the Core i5 is better (but also more expensive because of MOBO/CPU change).

Can you guys recommend a Core i5 setup? I'm assuming everything will stay the same except the MOBO/CPU. I'm just not sure which MOBO is good and which Core i5 to get...
