Hi

Basically I need a laptop for basic student use, I won't be doing anything demanding such as gaming but I need it to last, maybe as long as 4 years.

I need to know if I should go for something like this

Compaq Presario CQ61-401SA Notebook PC (15.6-inch Display, Windows 7 Home Premium, Intel Pentium T4400 Processor, 4 GB DDR2 RAM, 320 GB SATA HDD, 802.11 b/g/n Networking, Intel GMA 4500M Graphics): Amazon.co.uk: Electronics & Photo

or something a little more up market such as a dell?

UK only please,

Thanks,

- Tim

Having done warranty work for both companies (HP and Acer) I can say that out of the 3 brands I saw Acer and HP more than Compaq

Could also be that no one buys them. But they always had poor builds IMO.

Compaqs and HPs are almost always identical builds but with different badges and model numbers. But I am with you, I like Acers. Just gave a rebuttal in another thread to someone that said Acers were crap. It all comes down to personal tase

That Acer is actually quite a good bit better than the Compaq, for the price. A better GPU and bigger HDD mean it last you further toward that 4-year goal.

1080p isn't needed per se, but more screen real estate makes it easier to use and better-looking.
