Jbod question

I've got a external hdd with 2 drives setup as jbod.

The fan on the enclosure has died and the drives are getting hot. I'd like to just use them internally.

Can I change the setup and turn jbod off, making the disks stand alone without formatting or losing info?

can't you just take them out, using the same controller board? Think thats what they use.

No, windows tells me I have to format the drives if I take them off the controller.
