WILL NOT FORMAT

I have a Gateway laptop which has begun to run so badly that I decided to reformat the HHD and reinstall Windows XP.
When I run the installation disk to setup XP I get the message that it cannot find the hard disk and then aborts.
But the machine boots up into the old copy of XP so the HDD is obviously working.
Is there anything I can do to make it reformat the HDD?
Any help appreciated.

Use GParted, and see if you can reformat the partition from that. Another option is to run a Linux Boot-CD, and see if you can format it from there. Look at the very bottom of my sig.
