Server parts list

Okay so I have some hardware for a server. Doing this on a super small budget. What I have

Mobo: Socket 775
CPU: Celron D
Ram: 1gb ddr
Case: Custom FF modded mid tower.

So the thing is.. There are 2 sata ports. So I will probably be getting a sata PCI card eventually. BUT for now

I need a good size HDD 1tb or larger. (Thinking 2tb WD green).

I also need a hot swap bay. preferably 2x3.5" that fits in a 2x5.25". That way I won't need to put the HDD bays back in the case allowing more room.

Back up of 4 computers and media storage. Want eventually to do a 3tb+ server but don't have the money as I just purchased a PS3 and my Must Buy/Want to Buy could be a best selling book. But I do want to know a decent Hot swap bay and some decent HDD's for the job. The case is custom and the HDD mounts don't fit right with my design so I want to ditch them for the hot swaps.

a nas enclosure would prolly work best in this case, but it sounds like you have already acquired some of the hardware. 1gb ram should be fine as you won't be running a lot of programs. You'll prolly see the most performance gains with faster hard drives and fast network. CPU speed could play a factor too.

i'd build linux for this because i think linux uses less system resources than a windows server

Well I am using the hardware from a previous computer and I am running certian programs on it that connect with all my devices so I didn't think a NAS would work.

Look into FreeNAS it's prity much the dogs sexy parts when it comes to NAS software, also hotswap bay's are nice but not essential.

I want the hot swaps to replace the internal drive bays as they don't really work with my design. I havn't really found a hot swap bay that looks decent or has any type of good review.

So one 2tb HDD
and a 3 drive 2x5.25" hot swap bay.

As for the bays I have found these 2.. Preferring the looks of the first over the second.

I have the 1tb version in my gaming rig and its a nice drive for sure.

I thought that maybe the caviar green uses less power then the black since it would most likely be on for great amounts of time but not being used..

But I feel like the server i want to build would perform better. Especially since I will be connecting it to the XBOX PS3 and Wii to stream media as well as other devices that allow me to do so.

1GB of RAM is loads for a file/backup server especially if it's running Linux, but that's up to you. In your price range, hotswap bays are not going to be worth it but remember to have separate data and boot drives.

EDIT: OK so you want hotswap, fair enough. The ones you selected seem fairly even

Okay.. I have access to the latest Windows Server (2008 i believe??). But Linux seems like it would be ideal. I have PlayOn which I want to run from the server so all my music and videos can be accessed through out the house. I also want to run remote so I can access the server and install/uninstall and do file management without plugging in a monitor.

Bare with me I am new to setting up a server.

EDIT: Any ideas on going Caviar Green or Black?
