Animated GIFS saves as Bitmaps

Quicktime recognizes GIF movies frame-by-frame. If you choose to save (in most versions) it will attempt to save the single frame, and will do so as a bmp. I would suggest downloading the source file instead of trying to save it from the viewer.

Is it doing that for all media files? IE pictures and other movies?

If so, delete your cache in your internet browser. (In IE, tools > internet options > Delete files)
