Is there any free software that I can use to burn data cd's and dvd's

I need to back up some files to install a new OS

I was using nero, but it keeps wanting to burn an image, which I dont understand....it use to ask what speed i wanted to burn the cd.....now I do not get that option......it wants to burn an image and I just dont understand that.

Any help would be appreciated....I want to burn some pictures and just some simple text files.
