My boss has tasked me with coming up for a build for my new work PC.
It will be used for CAD and CAM. I run Delcam's PowerMill 2010, which does funky multi threading tricks, so my Core2 quad is maxed all the time. I used to use the calculation time to do small drafting jobs and such, but she falls over if I push it now. So after a bit of google work this is what I have come up with:

i7 930 cpu
Nvidia FX3500 Quadro graphics
Asus P6T Deluxe mobo
Kingston 1066Mhz DDR3 8Gb RAM
WD 500Gb SATAII hdd
Cooler Master Rc690 tower (includes 500W psu)
Win7 Ultimate 64bit

be great to hear your opinions (particularly if I have missed something)

TIA
Jordo

Budget is a little rubbery, anywhere from 1500 to 2500 AUD.

Obviously the lower the better I will look, but I am also trying to catch the mythical "future proofing" beast. A mobo that will take an i9 6 core in medium term would be good. I think the Asus will, but am not entirely sure.

For a i7 1366 skt you want triple channel memory.

So look for 3x2gb for 6gb total. If you need more you can get 6x2gb for 12gb total.

The dominators are great but overpriced. You can pick up some ocz gold ddr3 1600 for considerably less.

The new six-core AMD processor is also an option since this is a multi-tasking focused build.
