Building new PC, power turns off after about 5 sec.

What's up with this thing?

It turns on, everything works, fans, HDD spools, then it turns off..

any ideas?

Check all your hardware to see if they are plugged in properly, and your fans are working.

All the fans turn on, hard drive spins, everything lights up

but after about 5 seconds or so it just turns itself off :(

There is a small (really small) scratch on the motherboard, but it's right across the connection/wire/things on the motherboard that come from the RAM chip..

(this happened using a screwdriver to put on the CPU fan) I'm guessing that could be shorting it out??

*sigh*

What's NewEgg's return policy? I've had everything for about a month, but sitting in boxes until my case got here today.

I disconnected everything, except the CPU and CPU fan.

Still does the same thing.

When I hook up a different power supply, the power supply just makes a high pitched noise, but doesn't turn on.

Could it be the CPU fan isn't making contact with the CPU? Or what's up?

Thanks.

Talk to the company you bought the hardware from.

Let them know you bought the hardware and it's been sitting for a month until you were able to purchase a case. Tell them when you assembled it, the computer doesn't work and why. They'll tell you what your options are and be of better help than a forum, if their help doesn't work, ask about their return policy.
