I'm building a new pc after 6 years with my last home build desktop. With a new i7 processor and dual graphics cards I'm ready to jet into the gaming world with this PC. I would like you experts to comment on two things:
1. Will everything be compatible? What issues should I expect with this setup?
2. Will this kick the crap out of my 2GHz, 2GB pc 3200 ram, GeForce 6800 Ultra dinosaur?

The setup:
Mobo: ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard (Newegg.com - ASUS P6T Deluxe V2 LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard)

CPU: Core i7-920
(Newegg.com - Intel Core i7-920 Bloomfield 2.66GHz 4 x 256KB L2 Cache 8MB L3 Cache LGA 1366 130W Quad-Core Processor)

Memory: CORSAIR DOMINATOR-GT 6GB (3 x 2GB) (Newegg.com - CORSAIR DOMINATOR-GT 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model CMG6GX3M3A1600C7)

Video Card: two (2) XFX Radeon HD 4890's (Newegg.com - XFX HD-489X-ZSFC Radeon HD 4890 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card)

Case: Antec Nine-Hundred (Newegg.com - Antec Nine Hundred Black Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case)

PSU: Corsair CMPSU-1000HX (Corsair CMPSU-1000HX 1000-Watt Power Supply - ATX, 140mm Fan, SATA-Ready, SLI Ready at TigerDirect.com)

I am planning on getting a nice mouse and keyboard combo to go with the system. The monitor will be a nice flatscreen as well. I would really appreciate it if you could verify compatibility (will I be able to run 2 vid cards at 16x?) (will it boot?)

Thanks

Yes, you can run the two graphics cards at x16 (although it will make your third slot a lot slower, you can only run 16/16/1 or 16/8/8), yes it will kick the crap out of that computer, and I'm no expert, but everything looks to be compatible.

Just make sure you get a nice hard drive to go with this, and ensure your cooling system is up to scratch, especially if you want to overclock.

Just be sure to double check with someone that your PSU fits in your case. You probably won't need that much power, 850W would easily serve your system, but if you have the money, it'll save you when you need more.

EDIT: It might be a better idea to buy a single, more powerful card right now (such as the 5850 or 5870), as then when it comes time to upgrade, you just need to add a second card, rather than selling two and buying another one.

Yup, that's all compatible.

Seconded.

I'd also recommend getting a third-party cooling solution for the CPU. The 920's overclock VERY well, it's worth spending 50-60 bucks more on the cooler.

They saw you coming with that ram, don't get me wrong the corsair are great, but you can get ram with the same chips on it for much cheaper through other manufacturers. Regardless, you don't need ram of that calibre, this would be a great set for your system.
Newegg.com - OCZ Platinum 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Low Voltage Desktop Memory Model OCZ3P1600LV6GK
also grab a thermalright VenomousX cooler and replace the 4890 with 5870. As for figures, a 4890 is like 10% faster then a 4870, and a 5870 is about 2x a 4870 in performance. It'll kick the **** outta your dino comp.

yea dude, those dominators would cost you a small fortune.

you would already be saving a heap of money if you get that ram Baron linked.

you could also save a little more with these here.
Newegg.com - OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Low Voltage Desktop Memory Model OCZ3G1600LV6GK

also yes, considering your budget, don't get 2 cards and 2 last gen cards at that.
like Baron said, a 5870 would be a better option.
Newegg.com - XFX HD-587X-ZNFC Radeon HD 5870 1GB 256-bit DDR5 PCI Express 2.1 x16 HDCP Ready CrossFireX Support Video Card

and for a few bucks more, i would get this mobo
Newegg.com - ASUS P6X58D Premium LGA 1366 Intel X58 SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX Intel Motherboard

Thanks for the great suggestions! I'm all about saving money on some ram.

I know WD hard drives are pretty reliable, but what should I be looking for in terms of a new drive? I for sure want 500 Gigs, but should I go SATA or what?

Well, it really depends how much you want to spend. You could spend a grand on a 500GB SSD, or you could spend <100 on a 500GB 7.2k. If you want faster storage, you could use two 250GB drives in RAID 0, however there is no redundancy with that system, so if you are storing important data on these drives, use 4 250GB drives in RAID 0+1. That is what I am doing for my machine, but with 1TB drives - it's still significantly cheaper than a 500GB SSD

You'll probably want to go for 500GB, SATA, 7200RPM, and from a respectable brand like WD or Samsung (especially the Samsung Spinpoint F3s!)

your new build looks a lot like the one I'm almost finish, I'm changing the hdds to WD blacks as suggested by some people graphic card still don't know maybe 5870
