Toshiba Laptop PSLC8E Problem

I have a Toshiba laptop that I am trying to sort out for a friend, the problem is it will turn on but there is no screen illumination on the laptop or on an external monitor when connected, the hard drive activity light does not flicker, the CD/DVD tray opens, the cpu fan is also working and the machine will turn off when on/off button is pressed for about 10 seconds.

Can anyone help or is the laptop which is only 2 year old terminal and dustbin fodder.

Do you hear windows start up?

There is nothing after pressing the on button cpu fan fires up and screen is blank, also the activity light does not flicker, which makes me think a major motherboard failure.
