Hi everyone, I'm suddenly having major heating issues with my I7 920 chip (after two years of it working fine) My PC is having horrible performance issues and sometimes turns off when using PC heavy applications. Upon start up it will say "CPU Over temperature error"

I looked at the temp in the bios hardware monitor and it is saying that the processor is running at 85 degrees celsius which seems obscenely high considering I'm not overclocking this thing at all.

Another thing I noticed was the temp increases to 85 degrees very fast. I powered the PC off for 5 minutes. Then powered it on and watched the temp rise from ~60 degrees back up to 85 degrees in about 20 seconds, this is all in the bios with no major programs causing processor load.

Could this be due to the thermal paste wearing out somehow or something? I'm fairly clueless here so any suggestions would be appreciated.
