How important is it that i backup before installing SP2?

i would backup as lots of people have problems. just take an image of ur current installation

windows asks u if u wana backup b4 u install, but u can use plenty of programs to make images of ur system, like norton ghost

I would just wait for at least 6 more months before installing it.

ditto, i've seen many system been screwed by SP2, I even had to format my neighbours comp

yup, sp2 still is very buggy. i wouldnt recommend it yet. Wait a while. I have installed it, as i had to test it. But dont do as i did, the risks are to high, lol
