Monitor died, looking for a 24"

So, most of the 24" monitors are 1080p (1920x1080 res). Is this a better picture/res than 1920x1200? Common sense would lead me to believe not, but why then are so many monitors going with that resolution? I have an HDTV for HD content, so I just want the monitor for graphics, video/DVD creation, gaming, and general use.

Do you guys know much about these monitor resolutions?

Well this is a great monitor for a great price. Very similar to mine except for the addition of the hd tuner.

Yea, I was actually looking at both those, leaning more toward the $309 monitor.

So, is the 1080 resolution just for 16:9 aspect ratio or HD? I still think a 1200 res monitor would be better given the right specs.

When I was looking for one, I looked for the 1920x1200. There was not to many of them, maybe a couple of them. That is why I went with 1920x1080.

Wait a sec....

You're saying both are 16:9. 1920x12 is still WS but a different aspect ratio, right?

Yes 1920x1200 is 16:10 and 1920x1080 is 16:9 ratio. HD tv's are 16:9. Here is what a 16:9 picture would look like on a 16:10 monitor

Notice the two black bars on top and bottom, the picture is 1920x1080, and black bars make-up the vertical difference between 1200 and 1080 pixels.
PC Games can draw 16:10 ratio pictures so you will actually see more (those black bars worth) vertical picture. If you plugged in a PS3 or xbox360 (these can only display 16:9 ratio 1920x1080), you would see the black bars, and if you watched any HD TV you would see black bars.
Normal computing you would have more on your screen however, and pc games also.

If your more into games than watching movies/tv I would get a 24' with 1920x1200.
