is 8gb ram overkill? Im not really going for the best of the best but i am going for a computer that will last 8 years. something to be able to play current games and ones that come out 2010

I don't want to say that's impossible...... but 8 years is well, EIGHT FREAKING YEARS!

you could have gotten married and have 2 kids to boot in 8 years

is 8GB overkill?

for most people, yes, 8 GB is overkill

most people includes gaming people.

I would buy the HD4890 instead of the gtx260, it has better performance and it's cheaper.

the 4890 is definitely NOT cheaper than the GTX260, however it does outperform it.
The 275 will probably cost you about 20 bucks more, but it will outperform the 4890

Get the 4890 (if you can't find a 5850) if you prefer ATI, or a GTX 275 if you'd rather nVidia

My mistake, the gtx260 it's $10 cheaper give it or take it. Nevertheless the HD4890 it's a better option.
On the other hand the gtx275 it's $30 to 50$ more expensive regarding the HD4890 so, in my humble opinion, I still recommend the HD4890.

yeah 8 years the computer im on is 8 years old and it runs good but it is showing ware now.

lol, you're one patient fella.

8 years is unrealistic these days though. You'd get much better performance if you spent less now, and upgraded 2 years down the line.

I'm interested though, what PC are you on now? What was top of the line in 2001? I think Pentium 3s had just come out, right?

Let me guess..
Pentium 3 450mhz
128MB ram
12gb HD (you probably upgraded this)
Voodoo3
DVD-ROM

How'd i do?

Im not sure how this post got on the 1st page, i just saw it now, but that ram is not compatible. You need DDR3 ram, not DDR2.
