Speaker issue

I have a set of Harmen Karden speakers that are about 12 years old. One speaker has the controls on it and the power cord. The other speak has a ire that plugs into the other speaker. Sometimes when I use my speakers, the one with the controls on it always works fine. The other one stops playing on occasions until I turn up louder the ones with the controls on it and then the other ones comes back on and I can lower the volume back down again.

Do you guys have any ideas on what could be causing this?

Probably something internal. I would just try getting a new pair of speakers. Sometimes when they age the soundboard on the inside gets messed up. I have had the same problem with numerous speakers after a good five years of use.
