The components needed (assuming you're not reusing any old components) are
-cpu
-mobo
-ram
-graphics card
-hard drive
-dvd drive/burner
-power supply
-case
-operating system

Keyboard, mouse, monitor if you dont have those to reuse.

Post up the budget you'd like to spend and you'll get numerous responses of builds that include all the necessary components. And from there we can walk you through assembling the computer.

But out of dell or ibuypower, ibuypower is better.

Some things to work on,
-Do you know the programs you'll be using specifically can utilize 8gb of ram? because if not, 4gb should be plenty for normal use and in games.
-why do you want 2 dvd burners?
-is usb 3.0 even out yet?
-dont know anything about media card readers so i didnt select one.

I'd advise against the gtx 285, the gtx 275 is $100 cheaper and is about the same performance. The reason i recommended the gtx 260 was because of the resolution of the smaller monitor.

Hmmm, yeah I'd agree there. Forgot he was gonna be using a smaller monitor :)

I'd say go with the 275, the 260 is getting a little too low for a performance rig. I built a similar rig to this one not so long ago with a 260, and it ended up being just not enough. I like shoving everything up to max, and the 260 couldn't handle some of the games I had.

^he DOES need to stick to nVidia!! lol

on a serious note, I DID think of the 5000 series cards. But as you might not have noticed, getting hold of a 5850 is nigh impossible. They're all sold out

Well, he's probably not buying this build immediately. Maybe he plans to do it in a couple of weeks or so... i'm sure they'll come in stock somewhere by then...
