hey guys,
for laptop processors do they have to be the mobile processors? or can they use desktop processors?

or does it all depend on the what the motherboard specifies?

thanks guys!

Hi,

It will depend on what the motherboard (and it's BIOS) supports, and also the thermal management of the laptop itself (i.e. the thermal design power of the processor which the laptop's cooling system can tolerate).

Why do you ask? Are you thinking of buying a new laptop, or thinking about upgrading a processor in an existing laptop?

Nearly all laptops sold today have mobile processors, designed to use less power than desktop processors, and with lower thermal design power. However, occasionally you'll come across a desktop replacement laptop utilising a desktop processor (though, it's less common these days).

If you're asking because you're thinking of replacing the processor in an existing laptop, it's always better to replace the processor like for like. If you're thinking about upgrading the processor, then to increase the chance of compatibility, it's a good idea to see whether other configurations of your laptop model exist with better processors, and upgrade to that processor. However, note that there's no guarantee that different processors will be supported by the motherboard and its BIOS, or whether your laptop's cooling system can support processors with a higher thermal power design.

Hi,

Okay I understand. Check out the following document. It will give you a list of validated components compatible with the OCZ OCZDIY17B1-US DIY barebones notebook:

http://www.ocztechnology.com/diy/17_DIY_NVIDIA_Validated_Components.pdf

It lists the following validated processors:
Intel Core 2 Duo/Extreme/Quad

QX9300 (2.53GHz, 12MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
X9100 (3.06GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
P9500 (2.53GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
P8600 (2.4GHz, 3MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
T9400 (2.53GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 1066MHz FSB)
T9300 (2.5GHz, 6MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
T8300 (2.4GHz, 3MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
T8100 (2.1GHz, 3MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
T7700 (2.4GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)
T7500 (2.2GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 800MHz FSB)

These are all mobile processors. Stick to this list to ensure complete compatibility.
