well, you could go the intel route. the i5 can easily hit 4GHz. and plus the i5's are faster than the PII at stock speeds.

If you're going to overclock don't forget to buy a good after market sink.

An aftermarket heatsink is not necessary if your only gonna push that phenom .2 GHz. If your looking to do some heavy OCing then it would be a good idea.

A great way to pick up ram is by comparing the FSB on your chip to the clock of MHz on the RAM. My PC has a 1000Mhz(for example) but using RAM speeds of 533mhz or 667mhz puts more stress on the CPU reducing some performance.

Also, look into ECC ram, it's equiped with a 9th dimm chip for error checking parity. That way if a ram module produces a problem, the 9th chip will find the bad chip and report to the CPU not to use it. A great way of increasing the longevity of your computer.

Hey, this is my first build, I am not crazy about spending tons of money here, and its just mid-range. ATM I have pretty much everything sorted out, but I need help choosing compatible ram, I would only want 3gb max, because I bought Win7 32bit, due to compatibility problems.


If anyone could please help, offering possibly better options or helping me in any way, that would be great.

Also, if anyone can post a link to 2gb of compatible RAM that would be great!

What is your budget? What do you want to run? Are you going to use 64bit OS?

In the long run, I'd swap the 1TB drive for two smaller drives and run a RAID configuration. The 16GB capable motherboard is nice, but, are you going to use all that available resources for RAM ? More is always better, but that won't exceed your PC performance. Try maximum's of 8 GB if you're not going to run 64bit software.
