Sounds like the graphic card could be faulty. Try another graphic card if you have one available. Or try re-seating the 5870.

Make sure that all cables are secured and snug.
 
i did try that and also tried putting it in the other mobo slot for graphics cards. so im not sure if the card is the problem or not. the fan does work on it but who knows. i was under the impression from looking around on forums that the motherboard would beep a certain way to tell you what was wrong. like 1long 2short beeps means something etc??
 
alright so it is all figured out and running beautifully... well for the most part. the asus mobo has two power plug-ins. i was only in one of them. so everything else is running incredible. however the vista that i ordered has made it very clear to me in the 2hours or so i have been on it why i went to mac a few years ago. hopefully windows 7 upgrade is smoother. thank you for the help b1 i greatly appreciate it.
