What's low level format?

hmm i use quick format everytime, and deletes everything. mmm, may be i'm confused a little myself cuse i only use two things, that are format and quick format.

i could be wrong but i thought LLF wrote 0s to the drive not 1s?

lol....there seems to be some confusion here. Low Level formatting isn't Zero-filling a drive or writing all 0s to a drive. You actually build the drive up from sectors and clusters. High-level formatting is simply reformatting the drive through FDISK whoops....i meant the "Format" command or through NT setup.

OK, I have came with another idea,

Low Level formating is:

when you make clusters/sectors (as told by giggleplants)

and high level means when you give file system, like NTFS or FAT32.

to some extent gigleplants is right in lat line, but it doesnt specifically shows up, as in FDISK, you can only partition to FAT32's (i believe).

any other additions?

yea...i jumped the gun a little. but yea, you're right, you can only setup partition in FDISK. My point was to discourage the previous points (except for ek, of course) and set a straight story about LLF.

I commonly associate FDISK with what I usually perform right afterward..... format c: /s
