MS have updated XP specifications for minimum installed Ram
XP SP3 = 512meg
Note: This is without any other programs installed, including Antivirus software
I believe 2 gig is the real minimum that XP users should use
The 3.2 Gig swith you speak of by editing the Boot.ini file, is NOT desired
As XP will still only use up to 2Gig max at any one time, therefore do not purchase more than two gig of ram for XP
Muffin Man posted a link to Newegg regarding purchasing 2x1 Gig of Ram
Please note that on some very old systems, the maximum Ram card amount may only be 512meg per channel, best to confirm this through your motherboard or computer manual
