Hello, I'd appreciate if someone could help me...here is my dilemma..

My granddaughter built a pc for me four yrs ago...two months ago the motherboard broke and my son talked me into buying apple iMac. Didn't like it so sold it at a loss last week.

Our local PC repair man told me to try and buy the exact model mb and all my problems would be solved.
I was able to buy one on ebay ($100) and had him install it. Thought all my problems were solved. WRONG

Now there is no audio, I have to turn pc on & off till it finally is on screen and sometimes the keyboard doesn't work. The screen will read....Please check signal cable. That is when I turn pc on & off a few times till it works.

So I have decided to buy some parts and bring them to repair man and have him put it together for me. (Maybe I need a new PC repair man too)

Below is what I have now.....

Intel Pentium 4

Asus P4S800D-E Deluxe SIS655TX R mother board

Seagate 160GB / 7200/ 8MB / Internal ATA hard drive

ATI Radeon 9600XT Video Care, 128MB DDR, 128-BIT, DVI/TV-Out, 8X AGP

Kingston 184 Pin 512MB DDR PC-3200 (two of these)

Antec 430W power supply

Zalman CNPS7000A CPU Cooler

Lianli PC-6083A Silver Case

ALPS 3.5 ince Floppy Disk Drive

CD disk thingy (can't find paperwork)

well whats your budget for the pc?

amd would offer more bang for your buck than intel cpu's, and that graphics card and power supply are way more than you need. a mobo with onboard video would be good enough for what you say youre going to do with it.

I don't want to spend more $1,000. I've lost $400 already on apple and used mb. I'm hoping to use my Lian-Li case.
Thanks,
Emma

For $1000 you can really get a good gaming rig. Since you previously mentioned that you don't want to game.. I'd recommend cutting your budget and save some money.

AMD Phenom II X3 720
A 790GX board (use its IGP since you mentioned nothing about gaming)
Corsair 450VX
DVD-RW (SATA drive)
Newegg.com - OCZ SLI-Ready Edition 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory Model OCZ2N800SR4GK - Desktop Memory
Any amount of HD Space (SATA is preferred though)

___________
$125 is wayyy too much to pay for an HD 3850 512MB today, I have that GPU, and while its good, I wouldn't pay that much for it.

vernong1992...Sorry, I don't understand what you mean when you say...A 790GX board (use its IGP since you mentioned nothing about gaming)

Thanks,
Emma

IGP = Integrated Graphics Processor
i.e. don't buy a (cheap or otherwise) dedicated graphics card, just get a motherboard which integrated graphics; I believe all 790GX boards (790GX is a chipset) have integrated.
So, look for motherboards which are the 790GX chipset.
