An Intel based board will not work with an AMD processor. The quad core you chose isn't known to be a great chip. A 780 or 790 series chipset are best for the AMD side as of now. I would look into getting a Phenom II either quad or triple core (940, and 720 come to mind). If you don't want to shell out that much cash, a 7750 Kuma (or 7850 would be a great buy, they're cheap) and fast. You will need a full version of Windows XP too, you will not be able to do a fresh install with an upgrade version. You may want to look into getting a better power supply, the one in the case isn't great. Most newer PC games are DVD, so a DVD-ROM drive might be a good buy. Just buy the cheapest one with good reviews.

Hes gonna have to spend a bit more for the build he wants, Its not worth getting the 4870 if he is only going to get a 7850. If he spends about 575 he can get a nice phenom 940 like apoco said with a decent board and a better psu. The ocz modxstream would be good.

Tell us your budget so we can sort something out.

ofcourse you could get better parts :p

i was just trying to get as close as i could to the total that his original list cost.

and i think the rosewill would work (20a each on 4 rails, pretty good), i wouldnt try to xfire with it, but again, whatever the budget is, an antec or corsair would be rather nice.

I love the seagate hard drives, usually come a bit cheaper then the WD's and are really the same speed, never had any problems with mine.
